TRULY BONE-Ah-Fide - From Jerry Burrow, Bike Builder Of The Year
“Jerry Burrow, the chopper you call “Clear And Present Danger” just won Easyriders Bike of the Year for 2007. What will you do next? Building custom bikes on this level means you have arrived. You are bona fide. In order to stay here you’ve not only got to bring it, you gotta keep it comin’. Jerry’s Ford Heights, Illinois, custom bike shop is known as RoadHawgs, and their ambition, talent, and vision are responsible for unique parts and jaw-dropping designs.
The technologies that were required to produce their Bike of the Year winner were honed and refined until Jerry was ready to shove all of this glorious goodness together into his newest project. Perhaps you remember RoadHawgs original helicoid gear-drive primary. Jerry wanted to be able to see all five of the gears while they turn, so he stretched them out a bit. This is the only motorcycle in the world with a herringbone gear-drive primary, which kinda makes it “Truly Bone-ah-fide!” And that’s what the crew at RoadHawgs named this one. The herringbone pattern serves to minimize axial movement and reduce power loss and heat. According to Jerry, “Truly Bone-ah-fide is bad to the herringbone.”
Jerry came up with the design for this drop-dead gorgeous bike and is especially proud of the way the tank came out. Everyone in the RoadHawgs crew had a chance to work on it. Jerry put over two months of time into hand pounding the tine into shape. Derek Dumbowski did the TIG welding, and Danny Allen and Kenny Hanisko made the flat-side plates for the inner sections. Ricky Troy was back on the lathe making the countless spikes out of dowel pins, while Brian “Grinder-boy” Nelson was busy smoothing away all sins. Without a doubt, the most important support came from John Bodanero, Mongo and MoonDick. Everyone had an equal share in the blessings and curses of Truly Bone-ah-fide, since it was built entirely from donated time and talent.
A ground-up custom bike of this caliber is not something for the squeamish, since it takes more than one hour to swap out the battery. The rear brake is a very unique and effective component from Baldwin 360. It looks great and it works even better. We couldn’t help but notice that the 280-millimeter wide Avon on the backside is 20 inches in diameter. Avon makes tires this size exclusively for custom applications and Jerry says you will have to make your own rims if you want to run them. RoadHawgs took two automotive rims, sliced them in half and bolted them back together with this piece of Avon rubber in between them. Jerry built the engine out of a bunch of parts that were layin’ around the shop. Delkron cases, STD head, TP cylinders all come on strong when hit by the awesome spark from that might Morris Magneto.
RoadHawgs shares their complex and part of the parking lot with a juice joint called PickUps, which is the perfect place to unwind for Jerry and the RoadHawgs crew, especially on Thursday night for bike night. Truly Bone-ah-fide has a growing fan club and you can be sure that there’s more coming from RoadHawgs. Maybe not coming so soon, but they were breathing hard. Speaking of....you may recognize the partially clad lady on these pages; she’s Olivia Kent, one of the lovely Pets from Penthouse. She sure put a smile on our faces and we hope she’ll do the same for you.
